Gary Lineker tells Viktor Gyokeres to learn from what Dominic Calvert-Lewin does at Leeds

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Viktor Gyokeres could not be in more contrasting runs of form at Leeds United and Arsenal, respectively.

Calvert-Lewin has now scored in six consecutive games for Leeds, adding another to his tally as Daniel Farke’s side drew 1-1 with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

As for Gyokeres, despite the fact that Arsenal are top of the Premier League, he has found the net just once in December, converting a penalty against Everton.

Former England striker Gary Lineker believes that the Swedish international could learn a lot from Calvert-Lewin.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin putting Viktor Gyokeres to shame

Calvert-Lewin had a slow start to his Leeds career after making the move to Elland Road over the summer, finding the net just once in his first nine games.

However, the 28-year-old has burst into life over the past month, scoring seven times in his last six matches in the top-flight.

Calvert-Lewin now sits fifth in the Premier League top scorer rankings with eight goals, three more than Gyokeres has managed in a vastly superior Arsenal side.

The former Sporting Lisbon man has underwhelmed since signing for the Gunners, with all of his goals coming against teams in the bottom half.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Lineker urged Gyokeres to replicate what Calvert-Lewin has been doing for Leeds, if he wants to score more goals.

He said: “I’ve watched him [Gyokeres] quite closely the last few weeks and I think he is one that waits to see where it’s going, the ball, waits until it’s crossed and then attacks the space.

“As a striker you got to gamble on where you think the ball might go and you go just as they’re about to cross it.

“Dominic Calvert Lewin did a perfect example of how to do that for the Leeds goal at Sunderland, perfect. He sprinted at the near post and hoped that the ball would be delivered there and it was.

“I don’t see that too often from Gyokeres at present, the players that score big numbers will do that.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has one thing Viktor Gyokeres does not

Calvert-Lewin has not been in such a purple patch for a long time, but he has proved in the past that he is one of the most dangerous strikers in the Premier League when he is on form.

Unlike Gyokeres, the Leeds man is full of confidence, clearly operating on pure centre-forward instinct rather than overthinking chances.

Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser against Sunderland was the perfect example of this, the former England international not taking a single glance at the goal before finishing first time beyond Robin Roefs.

Finding the back of the net is coming naturally to Calvert-Lewin at this moment in time, and it gives him a huge advantage over the likes of Gyokeres who are struggling to build momentum.
