Gary Lineker shares what he thought about Leeds United after ‘feisty’ clash v Preston

Gary Lineker shared that, while watching Leeds United against Preston on 21 January, he kept thinking the Whites would win the game before they eventually nicked it at the end.

The BBC pundit praised the passion of the game between both sides in what was an entertaining affair before a late penalty from Joel Piroe snatched all three points at Elland Road.

Lineker’s comments came as he weighed up the Championship promotion race between Leeds, Southampton and Leicester and debated the fairness of parachute payments.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker shared: “Leeds, a good result for them.

“It was a really entertaining game, it was quite passionate and feisty. I kept thinking ‘Leeds are going to nick this’ and they did at the end.”

Leeds will be right up there

That expectation the former Leicester striker had when watching Leeds is what Daniel Farke has brought to this team. Of course, they went into the game as favourites, but the difference between looking for a winning goal and expecting to score one is all about confidence.

Going into the final minutes of the Preston clash, you almost knew they’d find a way. Especially at Elland Road. That’s a sign of how impressive Leeds have been, and they will be right in the mix for automatic promotion.

For Lineker to leave out second-placed Ipswich from his promotion contenders in favour of fourth-placed Leeds perhaps shows the level of expectation Farke’s side is facing in their push to bounce back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The four leading teams in the Championship look the most likely to battle it out for the two automatic promotion places, while West Brom and Coventry currently round off the playoff places, but with just six points separating sixth and fourteenth, it’s as unpredictable as ever.
