Gary Lineker reacts to Leeds United appointment of Sam Allardyce

Gary Lineker has provided his reaction to the appointment of Sam Allardyce as Leeds United head coach for the remainder of the season.

On his Twitter account, the Match of the Day presenter used a one-liner after it was confirmed that the veteran Premier League boss was back in the game.

Allardyce has just four games to make an instant impact if the Whites are to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Leeds United

The former England striker appeared to make a jibe at the expense of the club, given the context of the words that he used.

“Leeds have literally given it to big Sam until the end of the season.”

A tongue-in-cheek reference or poking fun at the desperate plight of Leeds? We won’t have long to find out who gets the last laugh

Back with a bang

As if the run-in to the Premier League season wasn’t dramatic enough, in comes a massive character in Allardyce who will certainly make an impression in West Yorkshire.

The phrase used by Lineker is often used ironically to signal that a club or manager is in trouble, often with a reference to the hard-working, old school ways that the one-time England boss made his reputation from.

The battle to avoid the drop looks set to go right to the wire and if the survival act specialist has his way, there will be late joy and relief at Elland Road.

Leeds have acted now, in the hope that the adage of ‘better late than never’ rings true. Javi Gracia had become a lame-duck boss and it was the right decision to remove him although it could turn out to be a case of too little, too late.

First up is a formidable challenge against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. He couldn’t, could he?

In other Leeds news, Phil Hay has named three more figures set to follow Orta and Gracia out of Elland Road as the exodus continues.
