Gary Lineker jibes back at Micah Richards over Leeds United ‘grief’
Gary Lineker jokingly jibed back at Micah Richards over the Leeds United “grief” he received from his The Rest is Football co-host.
Match of the Day host Lineker is a big Leicester City supporter and Leeds’ 4-0 loss to QPR on Friday (26 April) ensured the Foxes were promoted back to the Premier League.
It means Leeds are directly battling it out with Ipswich Town and a need their rivals to slip if they are to get automatic promotion.
Lineker said he had sympathy for Whites supporters but could not resist reminding Richards of the glee he took at Leicester’s recent dip.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast (29 April), he said: “It wasn’t long ago Micah, you were singing ‘Leeds, Leeds, Leeds’ at me and giving me grief because Leicester had a slight blip. I feel a bit for Leeds fans because I know what it’s been like for Leicester.
“You have to get back in the Premier League and Ipswich are now favourites to do that. Leeds look like they may drift into the playoffs. A big thank you to QPR for a very enjoyable experience on Friday night.”
What went wrong for Leeds United against QPR?
The game started badly as Ilias Chair was given all the space in the world to cut in on his favoured right foot as Ilia Gruev let him go to make it 1-0.
Lucas Andersen was allowed to wander into the box and afforded plenty of space to curl a goal of his own home to double the lead as Leeds’ evening back to unravel.
It must be said that Asmir Begovic and the Hoops’ defence were on top form, which certainly made it tough for the Leeds forward line throughout.
What isn’t acceptable is allowing a striker like Lyndon Dykes to get free from a corner to head home easily past a flapping Illan Meslier.

Again for the fourth goal, Sam Field was all alone to head home from the edge of the six-yard box.
The theme here is a lack of urgency from the Leeds players as QPR were allowed all the space they wanted to get their efforts on goal away.
With Southampton coming to Elland Road on the final day, Farke needs to work out how he can get the most out of his side ahead of a potential playoff run.
In other Leeds United news, Real Betis want to sign Marc Roca on a “cheap” deal.
