Gary Lineker and Ian Wright baffled by Ezgjan Alioski in Leeds United loss v Brighton
Ezgjan Alioski left Gary Lineker and Ian Wright baffled after the Leeds United left-back conceded a penalty against Brighton on Saturday.
Pascal Gross scored from the spot in the 14th minute after Danny Welbeck was pulled to the ground by the 29-year-old North Macedonian.
Micah Richards hailed Welbeck for making himself a “nuisance” in the box on BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday night while Lineker and Wright were more bothered by how Alioski gave away the penalty.
Lineker said: “Why do defenders do that?
Ian Wright replied by saying: “What is he doing?”
Liability
Alioski isn’t a Premier League left-back, let’s face it.
He’s had a lot of poor games this season and that penalty he conceded against Brighton just sums up how hot-headed the North Macedonia international can be.
It was pointless and done out of sheer desperation as he hauled Welbeck to the ground.
With VAR in operation, it was never not going to be a penalty.
Alioski does seem like he might be leaving at the end of the season when his contract at Elland Road expires.
Honestly, it’s probably for the best because the 29-year-old struggles to perform well in the Premier League – although he has had a few decent performances lately.
Still, it won’t be the end of the world if Alioski moves on and if he does, Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta should be able to sign a proper left-back as a replacement.
