Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer share Leeds United relegation verdict after loss v Manchester City

Gary Lineker and Alan Sheared have shared a relegation verdict for Leeds United following their 2-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday (6 May).

A double from Ilkay Gundogan helped seal all three points for the hosts at the Etihad, with Rodrigo netting late on for the away side.

The defeat leaves Leeds in 17th place in the Premier League table, with goal difference the only thing keeping them out of the relegation zone.

“Leeds were the only team that are in that relegation fight that played [on Saturday] and obviously they didn’t get any points – but it was always unlikely at Manchester City,” Lineker said on Match of the Day (18m30s). “I mean, it’s going to be tight, isn’t it?”

Shearer replied: “That next home game for Nottingham Forest against Southampton is huge. I think Southampton are already gone but it’s going to be tough for Leeds, particularly with the way they defend.”

Worrying times

Big Sam has been brought in to put out yet another Premier League fire, but he may find that this fire is one that he cannot extinguish.

Leeds are a sinking ship, with little to no signs that they can push their way out of trouble as the season rapidly draws to a close.

Perhaps their only hope of survival is the continuous struggles of those around them, with the likes of Southampton, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City all very short of confidence.

Allardyce has relied on a strong defence at his various clubs over the years, and that is something he simply doesn’t have at Leeds, with the Whites leaking goals at the back, particularly in recent times.

The Yorkshire outfit now have just three matches to put things right, but it doesn’t get any easier as they take on high-flying Newcastle next, with the Magpies travelling to Elland Road on Saturday (13 May).
