Gareth Crooks names Kalvin Phillips in Premier League Team of the Week
BBC Sport pundit Gareth Crooks has named Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips in his Premier League Team of the Week after an impressive outing against Manchester United.
Leeds United had every reason to be happy with the result on Sunday, and know the result could’ve swung either way given how the game was on a knife’s edge.
Both teams ended up nullifying each other but Leeds’ defensive work was commendable and that was primarily due to Kalvin Phillips providing cover to his back four.
The England international was a thorn in Bruno Fernandes’ side and did not let the Portuguese settle and dictate the tone of proceedings.
Crooks too was impressed by the 25-year-old’s performance on Sunday.
In his column on BBC Sport, he wrote, “My interest tended to centre on the contest in midfield between Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Leeds United’s Phillips. I’ve mentioned Phillips before in my team of the week and rate him very highly.
“His performance against Fernandes was impressive. The England midfielder not only relished the battle with the Portuguese star but frustrated the life out of United.”
Gets better with every game
Phillips’ influence on this side is more apparent with each passing game. It’s no surprise why we struggle to control games and drop points when the midfielder’s unavailable.
On Sunday, Marcelo Bielsa knew what Bruno brought to the table and asked Phillips to man-mark the attacking midfielder and restrict him in the final third, and that’s precisely what he did.
The 25-year-old rarely put a foot wrong in that game and was duly praised by the media in the aftermath of the game.
He made the most ball recoveries (13) and won the most tackles of any player involved in the game (8/8) [LUFCDATA].
His pass completion rate was close to 85 percent and it wasn’t all sideways as he completed 6 out of his 7 attempted long balls and also created 3 chances.
The Yorkshire Pirlo came up with yet another Man of the Match performance and we’re so lucky to have him here at Elland Road.
