Gabby Agbonlahor makes Aston Villa jibe at Leeds United live on air

Leeds United being promoted to the Premier League would mean an easy six points for Aston Villa next season, Gabby Agbonlahor has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (30 December, 6:54am), Agbonlahor couldn’t resist aiming a jibe at the Whites as they finish 2024 two points clear at the Championship summit, beating Derby County 1-0 on Sunday.

While stating that he does want to see United back in the Premier League, Agbonlahor emphasised that was only due to him believing that they would be easy-beats for his former side Villa next term.

Agbonlahor said: “Do you know what, I actually would like them both to get promoted, Leeds, because you know teams get three points against Leeds.

“So it’d be nice for Villa to get six points next season, help them get back to the top four.”

Leeds United can be a match for Aston Villa once again

While Agbonlahor is spot-on that it didn’t take much to beat the Peacocks in their most recent Premier League season, Villa didn’t always have the easiest time of it during Leeds’ three-year top-flight spell.

Under Jesse Marsch, Michael Skubala, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce in the 2022/23 campaign, United lost 21 of their 38 games, winning just seven times to go down with a whimper on 31 points.

Former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch was hired following his successful use of Red Bull’s tactics.

The Villans, however, didn’t claim six points against the Whites that season, drawing 0-0 at Elland Road before edging them 2-1 at Villa Park in a match which proved to be Marsch’s third-last in charge.

In fact, Villa didn’t win both games against United in any of their three recent top-flight seasons, with one victory apiece in 2020/21 before drawing 3-3 at Villa Park and winning at Elland Road the next campaign.

That 3-0 behind-closed-doors victory for United at the apex of the Bielsa era in 2020/21 also proved to be Patrick Bamford’s magnum opus, with United fans hopeful that they can reach those heights again.
