Gabby Agbonlahor: Gareth Southgate right with England selections, look at Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips

Gabby Agbonlahor has used Leeds United star, Kalvin Phillips, as an example to show why Gareth Southgate is doing a good job with England.

Southgate was left raging after his selection of Harry Maguire was heavily booed in the 3-0 win over Ivory Coast on Tuesday evening.

Agbonlahor used Southgate picking Phillips while in the Championship was a brilliant example of how he was getting things right.

Speaking live on talkSPORT this morning [30 March, 8:15 am], Agbonlahor surprisingly backed the Yorkshire Pirlo.

“He played Kalvin Phillips when he was in the Championship and it was right,” he said.

“He has the power to do what he wants.”

Star.

Picking Phillips may have been seen as a major risk to outsiders at the time, but Leeds fans knew it was easily earned.

Look what happened after that – the Yorkshire Pirlo was voted as England’s Player of the Year after his maiden 12 months with his country.

Southgate has had his critics, but even we know those boo-boys of Maguire were ridiculous last night and is coming from a Leeds fan.

You have to back your county, and doing that before games have even started is ludicrous, we don’t do that to the likes of Phillips.

Phillips is the perfect example of what brilliant support can do, he has it from all corners at Elland Road and it has catapulted him to the top.

When even Agbonlahor is questioning something, you know that it must be big, and we have to agree with his perfect example here.
