‘From what I’m hearing…’ – Phil Hay says Leeds star highly unlikely to play again this season
Jean-Kevin Augustin is “highly unlikely” to play for Leeds United again this season, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.
Augustin, 22, joined Leeds on loan from RB Leipzig in January but managed just three appearances as a substitute before a hamstring injury set him back in his progress before the coronavirus-enforced suspension of the Championship.
The Frenchman used the lockdown period to get back to full fitness and looked a completely different player when images emerged of him returning to training at Thorp Arch.
However Leeds have now been dealt with the hammer blow that Augustin is unlikely to play for them this season.
“We don’t have a full diagnosis from Leeds at the moment but from what I’m hearing, it’s highly unlikely we’ll see him at any point in these last nine games,” Hay said on the Phil Hay Show podcast.
“It was unlikely we were going to see him in the nine games that had been originally scheduled because he was in much the same situation.”
Leeds should be able to cope without Augustin because he’s hardly played for them since his move to Elland Road in January. However that thought might change if Patrick Bamford was to suffer an injury or get hit with a suspension.
Bamford has started all but two of Leeds’ Championship games this season and is very much Marcelo Bielsa’s go-to choice up front.
If Augustin is injured and, for whatever reason, Bamford can’t play, Tyler Roberts will no doubt be the player Bielsa turns to.
Roberts was in strong form before the Championship season shut down with his brace away at Hull City being one of the highlights of his spell as a Leeds player.
If Roberts can be as prolific as he was at Hull, Leeds are unlikely to miss Bamford and Augustin should that scenario materialise.
