‘From reading what I’ve read…’ – Bamford says what should happen with 19/20 season
Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford has urged football’s governing bodies to find a way to complete the 2019/20 season.
It has been over a month since Leeds played their last fixture against Huddersfield in early March but it seems like there is no way football can return any time soon with the coronavirus pandemic still causing hundreds of deaths each day in the United Kingdom.
There has been talk of voiding the season but Bamford is adamant that the only fair way to conclude the campaign is for the remaining fixtures to be played out.
Leeds, like every other club in the Championship, have nine matches to play and Bamford says it would make economical sense for them matches to go ahead at some point.
“From reading what I’ve read it’s something that’s got to happen (finish 19/20) because there is so much reliant on the season finishing and the problems it would pose to every club,” he said, as quoted by LeedsLive.
“Not only those that are small and qualified as small businesses, but even the big, multi-millionaire ones like Man City for instance.
“They’re going to take a hit if the season didn’t finish, so it’s better for everyone’s interests for it to finish, it’s just putting heads together and deciding if we can finish without ruining the next season and seasons to come.”
People can say that the only reason Bamford wants the season to be finished is because Leeds are top of the Championship table and seven points clear of third.
This season has been Leeds’ best bid to win promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2004 and having that end because of the coronavirus pandemic would be a tough pill to swallow.
Bamford may well be biased. We may be too. But finishing the season is definitely the fairest way to deal with things.
