‘From a selfish point of view’ – Forshaw details one benefit of long-term injury at Leeds
Adam Forshaw has only managed to play seven Championship games for Leeds United this season, with a hip injury and subsequent surgery keeping him on the sidelines.
He’s in rehab now and due back in August and ironically that means he might still play a part in the 19/20 push for promotion.
And, while he admitted that it’s been hard to watch from the sidelines, he has said it’s given him a unique insight into Marcelo Bielsa’s coaching.
Forshaw went on to say that it had made him want to become a manager when his playing career is over.
Talking on the Colin Murray podcast 52, Forshaw was asked who the best manager is that he’s worked under.
“If I have to pin it on one person it has to be Marcelo Bielsa.”
Murray asked if Bielsa could be described as “obsessive” and Forshaw said, “100%, he’d agree, in fact he’s said that to me himself. In his field I’d say genius.”
He admitted it has been hard not being involved in the practical side of Bielsa’s coaching but Forshaw added, “Also, I’m sitting back and really watching. For me, from a selfish point of view I’m like a sponge I’m watching and have a chance to really evaluate what’s going on.
“I have times when I think I’d like to give it a go. You have time to think. I have a real keen eye… I think I will give it a go one day.”
Forshaw was in fine form at the start of the 19/20 season but after holding off on surgery, Leeds finally had to admit that he probably wouldn’t play again this season.
He’s still targeting an August return and recently posted an Instagram story showing him training at home on an exercise bike.
He hasn’t played since September and will be a long way from being match fit. But, if the season does drag on, he could well be introduced back on the bench, which would be no more than he deserves.
It would be a shame for Forshaw to miss out on the match when Leeds (hopefully) secure promotion if and when the current season resumes.
