Former Premier League referee shares if Raphinha goal for Leeds United v Brentford broke IFAB rules

Chris Foy claims that Leeds United attacker Raphinha’s goal rightfully stood against Brentford on the final day of the season.

His action while taking the penalty led to some questioning whether it was authentic and compliant with the IFAB rules.

However, he did not do anything incorrect and the referee was right to allow the goal to stand and not ask him to re-take it because of his action.

Speaking on the Premier League Weekend Review, the former Premier League referee said, “It is allowed. When you plant your foot, you have to kick the ball. You can’t delay it then. He’s not broken any rule there.”

Spot on

Players like Bruno Fernandes and Jorginho wait for the referees to commit before they kick the ball.

Raphinha’s is more straightforward in many ways and we’re not so sure why it was even being debated.

The fact that Leeds stayed up may have rubbed people the wrong way and they decided to look for things that don’t exist to discredit them.

Coming to the penalty, it was an exceptional spot kick and one the Brazilian must be proud of.

It was probably the most important and most expensive penalty of his life – given the financial gulf between the Premier League and the Championship.

He held his nerve and calmly put the ball past David Raya to give the Whites the lead which eventually led to them staying up.

In Leeds United news, an under-the-radar court case involving the transfer of a Leeds player has reached its conclusion with the final payout revealed.
