Former coach backs Leeds teenager to make ‘real impact’ in 20/21

Leeds United loanee Ryan Edmondson can make a “real impact” for Aberdeen this season, according to former York City coach Steven Torpey.

The 19-year-old made the move to Scotland last week, and was handed his debut for the Dons in a 1-0 defeat to Rangers on Saturday.

And Torpey, who worked with Edmondson at York, has backed him to impress during his time at Pittodrie, even going as far as to suggest that he could one day push for a starting spot with his parent club.

Speaking to the Evening Express, he said: “I believe Ryan can make a real impact with Aberdeen in Scotland and score goals.

“The Scottish Premiership will be a fantastic learning curve for Ryan. I watched his debut for Aberdeen and thought he performed well. Physically he brought a robustness, worked down the channels and fought for a few lost causes.

“Leeds have just been promoted to the Premier League, which is the next level. Ryan has the potential to push for that Leeds team.

“The loan with Aberdeen will be a real indicator in terms of where Ryan is with his development. Sometimes people forget that he only just turned 19 in May. He is not the finished article as there is still lots of room for growth.”

Edmondson may have only had a second half cameo against Rangers on Saturday, but he gave a good account of himself against one of the best sides in Scotland.

Over the course of his 32 minute appearance, Edmondson completed 10 successful actions, which is more than he has managed in the entirety of the 60 combined minutes he has played for Leeds’ first team, as per Wyscout.

Included in those 10 actions, he made seven successful passes and won two aerial duels.

It would appear that the Whites are suitably impressed with him too, with Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes suggesting that he is set for a new contract at Elland Road in the coming weeks.

Here’s hoping this season is the first step towards him realising his obvious potential.
