First group in the country – Angus Kinnear sends thanks to Leeds squad at awards ceremony
Angus Kinnear has sent a special thanks to the Leeds United squad for offering to defer their wages at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Whites’ chief executive was speaking at the annual awards ceremony at Elland Road and claimed the Leeds players were one of the first to do so in the country.
It was worth it in the end, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men cruising to the Championship title, finishing 10 points above nearest rivals West Brom.
Kinnear believes that this Leeds squad will take a special place in the club’s history, not only on the pitch but off it as well.
“I want to start with the players, tonight’s about the players,” he said via LUTV.
“This year I think you’ve been pretty much perfect on the pitch, you look at the stats – how far you’ve run, the shots you’ve had, the clean sheets, the goals you’ve scored.
“There’s actually a bigger reason to thank you and it’s a gesture you made off the pitch. At the height of the pandemic when we were really challenged from a financial perspective, you were the first group of players anywhere in the country to step forward and offer to defer your wages.
“Whatever you go onto achieve on the pitch, I think you will have a special place in the history of Leeds United for that gesture.”
Promotion to the Premier League is a massive boost for any club, especially financially and Andrea Radrizzani has benefitted from that.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche has claimed that Leeds had a £60million wage-bill in the past year and that his side would struggle to compete with that.
With Premier League managers making such claims about the Whites, it is clear that there won’t be any financial problems for Leeds next season.
