We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Leeds United may have a multi-million deal with a gambling company as their sleeve sponsor.
According to Dr Dan Plumley, this may even surpass the valuation of the current deal that’s in place with SBOTOP.
That’s because a new rule is likely to be imposed by the Premier League clubs which outlaws having gambling sponsors on the front of the jerseys.
However, they will continue to be allowed having the same company as their sleeve sponsors as that reduces the visibility.
Discussing this exclusively with MOT Leeds News, the Sheffield Hallam University expert said, “You’ve got to ask why ban one and not the other?
“Of course, you see more of the front of the shirt than the sleeves. However, it’s still visible on the sleeves so the exposure is still there.
“An interesting thing from this is why we might see some of the sleeve deals surpass the front of the shirt sponsorships.
“If they want to stay involved then we could see sleeve deals going to the tune of £10million as well as we’ve seen those amounts for front-of-shirt ones with Newcastle and Everton.”
The clubs want the rule changes to be phased in over three seasons so that those clubs who already have deals in place are not directly affected.
It’s understood that the required number of votes has already been reached which means that the motion is expected to pass.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have submitted a fresh bid to sign their first-choice target this summer as a Champions League club has pulled out of the deal.
