Farke receives transfer message as problem position mooted at Leeds United

Dominic Matteo has urged Daniel Farke to sign a new forward for Leeds United in the upcoming January transfer window.

The German has relied on Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe to provide the goals at Elland Road this season, but the pair has only managed eight Championship goals in 32 appearances collectively.

Former Leeds player Mateo spoke to LUTV, as relayed by Leeds Live [26 November], revealing people within the circle at Elland Road believe a new forward would strengthen the Whites “so, so much.”

He said: “A lot of Leeds people and the group that I’m involved in are saying that we just need an out-and-out striker. Someone to put the ball in the back of the net.

“I like Mateo Joseph and the players in that area, but I genuinely still believe we need a main striker. Pat [Bamford] has done well for us, but if we had a proper striker – another one – it would strengthen us so, so much.”

A proper number 9 would guarantee promotion for Leeds United

While Leeds have embarked on a tear in the Championship as of late, ascending to the summit of the league table, winning six and losing only once in their last 10 outings – there is a dilemma at centre-forward at Elland Road.

Joseph finds himself firmly behind Piroe in the pecking order in West Yorkshire and has flattered to deceive at times this season; his two goals in 16 appearances is a more accurate reminder of his contributions.

The Dutchman has also hardly captivated the supporters with his displays, and while he has proven to be the most prolific between the pair, his inconsistent form does not bode well for a side with Premier League aspirations and should Leeds secure a return to the top-flight, Farke could be willing to part ways with the 25-year-old.

Patrick Bamford’s departure looks inevitable, and loanee Sam Greenwood could fight for a place at Elland Road after his efforts with Preston North End but is likely to find himself surplus to requirements – all roads are leading to a new forward.

Leeds have been touted as a desirable landing spot for Manchester City youngster James McAtee for a January loan-move; however, Farke will need to bolster his forward line with a striker who can guarantee 15 league goals next term.

One look at the Premier League table reveals the daunting truth: all three newly promoted sides are stuck in a relegation scrap ahead of the campaign’s midway point.

Furthermore, Luton Town, Sheffield United, and Burnley immediately returned to the Championship last season after only one year back in the top flight.

McAtee would be a worthwhile signing for the present but not for the future – a loan deal makes sense for Leeds to help secure promotion but once back in the Premier League, Farke should go all out on a statement forward signing.
