TalkSPORT host Tony Cascarino has admitted he was wrong about Patrick Bamford following the Leeds United striker’s hat-trick against Aston Villa.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Cascarino said that Bamford’s performance on Friday night showed that he is ‘worthy’ of being a top-flight player. This follows his comments from January that the English striker couldn’t cut it in the Premier League, as ‘it’s another level’.
The former Chelsea striker also gave credit to Marcelo Bielsa for ‘pushing’ Bamford and seeing something in the forward that other people couldn’t see.
He said, “The manager has made a massive impact. He’s seen something many people, pundits, fans, people, in general, think that Bamford wasn’t good enough.
“Watch Patrick last night, he is worthy of being a Premier League player. All three of his goals, he’s got quick feet, he sticks the ball in the corner.
“Fair play to him. I’ve played with a lot of players who aren’t really that good but achieve way more than what they are capable of, and he’s doing that because he’s putting the effort in, he has the desire, and he’s got a manager who is pushing him really hard”.
Bamford now has six goals in six Premier League games this season and has been the vital man again after scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 win over Sheffield United in late September. He has repaid the faith shown in him by Bielsa and has certainly proved that he can do a job in the Premier League as he sits level in the goalscoring table with Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah.
Friday’s victory over Villa sent Leeds up to third in the Premier League and was the perfect response after Monday’s disappointing loss to Wolves. Leeds now have over a week to get ready for their next game against Leicester City as Bielsa’s side look to keep themselves towards the top of the Premier League.
Bamford will be looking to add to his six league goals when his side return to Elland Road and he will take confidence from the Foxes’ hit-and-miss form this season.
