Fabrizio Romano: Southampton submit official bid for Leeds United target Cody Gakpo
Southampton have submitted an official bid for Leeds United target Cody Gakpo are waiting on PSV Eindhoven to make a decision on his future according to The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano.
Romano revealed (via his personal Twitter account, 31 August) that the Saints are waiting on the Eredivisie side to make a decision before the transfer market closes in the Netherlands on Wednesday evening (31 August).
It’s understood that Leeds will make a move for the 23-year-old Dutch international should Daniel James opt to leave Elland Road.
Leeds are going to have to move quickly if they want to harbour any hopes of landing Gakpo with Southampton seemingly closing in on the player.
Whether he is a priority for Jesse Marsch is up for debate, but it would be extremely disappointing for the 23-year-old to make the move to the South Coast instead of choosing to head to Elland Road.
The £25million price tag seems quite reasonable for a player of Gakpo’s quality and bringing him to Elland Road would be good long-term business for the club.
His ability to play across the front four positions would allow Marsch to adapt his formations and he could even utilise Gakpo in a central striking role.
However, at the moment it appears the Saints do lead the way for the Dutch international and a move to Elland Road looks rather unlikely.
Considering that Leeds have been tracking Gakpo for the duration of the summer, losing out to a mid-table Premier League club is a bit of a kick in the teeth for the Whites.
