Fabrizio Romano: Leeds United want to sign Branco van den Boomen as free transfer decision made

Leeds United are among a host of European clubs interested in signing Toulouse midfielder Branco van den Boomen, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 27-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting hidden gems in French Ligue 1 helping the club to claim their first major trophy in their history after winning the Coupe de France against Nantes [29 April]

Van den Boomen has enjoyed a scintillating campaign in the French top flight, registering five goals and eight assists from 31 games after recording 12 goals and 21 assists in the French Ligue 2 last year.

And with his contract coming to an end this summer, the interest in his services was inevitable.

And according to Romano, taking to his personal Twitter account [5 May], the 27-year-old looks set to leave on a free transfer after deciding not to sign a new Toulouse deal, with Leeds United interested.

He tweeted: “Branco van den Boomen has decided not to sign a new deal with Toulouse now. He wants to keep his options open; contract expires in June.

“His top performances already led to interest from many clubs like PSV, OM, Feyenoord, Leeds United, Aston Villa, Sevilla, Wolfsburg, and Galatasaray.”

Exciting

If there was ever a midfield star on the continent well-versed in scoring and creating goals at an alarming rate, it is certainly Van den Boomen who has rapidly emerged on the scene after two excellent years at Toulouse.

15 goals and 29 assists in his last two campaigns is exceptional, and it’s easy to see why top clubs around Europe are interested in his services, seeing as he is refusing to sign a new deal.

This is a move Leeds United must exploit this summer if they are to secure their Premier League status for next season.

The Dutch midfielder has all the makings to thrive in the Premier League, given his tremendous creative and attacking qualities, something the Whites could well do with if they are to improve on their positioning in the English top flight.

First and foremost though, if Leeds United are to attract some of the most exciting names in the game, Premier League status remains of paramount importance. Players like Van den Boomen don’t come around too often, he’s an exciting footballer.

In other Leeds United news, other senior figures are now in line to be fired along with the manager after “emergency” talks.
