‘Extreme amount of money’ – BT pundit makes transfer claim as Leeds reportedly table striker bid
Ally McCoist believes that it would take an “extreme amount of money” for Rangers to consider selling Ryan Kent to Leeds United.
Steven Gerrard confirmed on Friday that Rangers rejected an opening bid by Leeds that was “nowhere near his valuation“.
According to The Sun, Leeds’ offer was £10million.
Gerrard is adamant that the Whites will have to pay more than that – and it seems Rangers legend McCoist does too because he believes Kent is integral to the Scottish side’s attack.
“Unless it’s an extreme amount of money I don’t think you can sell him,” McCoist said on BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra, as transcribed by the Daily Record.
“He’s the one player you’ve got that’s capable of doing something a little bit different and creating something.
“We saw him score a great goal with his left foot (against St Johnstone) similar to the goal he scored at Celtic Park last year.
“He’s just something different that Rangers don’t have, there’s a predictability about them in the middle, I think.”
Is Kent really worth more than the £10million that Leeds are said to have offered him?
Rangers paid £7.5million for the former Bristol City loanee when they signed him from Liverpool last summer after a successful year on loan at Ibrox.
Scottish Premiership clubs have nowhere near the wealth that Premier League clubs have, which makes it hard for them to turn down offers over £10million for anyone.
For example, Moussa Dembele cost Lyon just £19.7million, Southampton signed Virgil van Dijk for £13million and Rangers highest sale since 2012 was Josh Windass’ £2.5million move to Wigan.
Rangers are not in the position to be turning down massive offers but it’s not unusual for Gerrard to moan about bids being put in for his players with West Brom winding up the Gers boss with a bid for James Tavernier two years ago.
Gerrard talks a big game but we doubt that it would take much more for Leeds to get Rangers to accept a bid for Kent.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have stepped up their pursuit of this centre-forward by making contact with his club.
