Exclusive: Paul Robinson makes big claim about Casilla career at Leeds after £6m development

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that he doesn’t think Kiko Casilla has played his last game for Leeds, but added he won’t get straight back in the side after Illan Meslier’s performances.

Casilla has sat out two of his eight-game ban, handed down by the FA after being found guilty of racism against Charlton player Jonathan Leko.

Illan Meslier has taken the gloves and with a report that said Leeds were going to make his loan deal permanent in a £6m deal if they get promoted, there has been speculation that Casilla might have played his last game for Leeds.

However, talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson doesn’t think that’s the case.

“Casilla has still got a few years left on his contract. I don’t think he’s played his last game for Leeds, not at all.

“However, the way Meslier is playing, if he picks up where he left off, then Casilla will find himself on the bench when he gets back.

“Number one keepers, I’ve had it in my career, you’re out for a bit… Look at Gazzaniga at Spurs – as soon as Lloris was fit he came straight back in. Unfortunately, Kiko’s performances haven’t given him the comfort of that happening.

“If Meslier keeps playing the way he has I don’t think Casilla goes straight back into the side.”

Meslier has looked up to the task of replacing Casilla.

However, Casilla is on a big salary at Leeds and has a long-term contract that would see him at Elland Road until 2023.

Marcelo Bielsa is known for his loyalty to players and, so far, Leeds haven’t moved from their position of support for Casilla.

That could see Casilla re-installed as the number one if Leeds do get promoted to the Premier League.
