Ex-Leeds director sends one-word message to Liam Cooper after he signs for Sheffield Wednesday

Ex-Leeds star Liam Cooper made headlines after he signed for Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent earlier this week.

The Whites’ South Yorkshire rivals are undergoing well-publicised financial struggles, but now seem intent on using the free agent market to add much-needed bodies to their squad.

Cooper is held in high regard at Leeds, and he made over 260 appearances for them across a 10-year spell in LS11.

The centre-back left Elland Road in the summer of 2024, and he is now back in English football after a brief spell in Bulgaria with CSKA Sofia.

Massimo Marinelli congratulates Liam Cooper on Instagram

Cooper isn’t the only ex-Leeds man to move to Sheffield of late, with Patrick Bamford having also recently joined Sheffield United.

The striker recently had his contract terminated at Elland Road, and the pair could now meet this weekend, as the first Steel City Derby of the season is set to take place at Hillsborough.

Bamford’s move to Sheffield was confirmed last Thursday, with Cooper then following suit and joining up with his new club on Monday.

The Owls announced the signing of the former Scotland international on their Instagram account, and ex-Leeds director Massimo Marinelli was quick to wade in with a message of support.

The Italian simply replied with “Congrats” in the comments section, as he gave his seal of approval.

Leeds should consider Harry Gray loan deal with Sheffield Wednesday

Harry Gray looks set to leave Leeds on loan in the January transfer window, with a whole host of Championship clubs queuing up to take him on a deal until the end of the season.

The 17-year-old striker is the latest jewel in the crown of the academy at Thorp Arch, and he now looks ready to take the next step in his development and gain senior experience out on loan.

Sheffield Wednesday are not currently among the list of clubs who are chasing the starlet’s signature, but Daniel Farke and Co. should surely be weighing up a potential deal if their counterparts are interested.

Deals between the two teams don’t take place very often, but with the Owls’ recent struggles leaving their squad badly short of options, Gray would likely get plenty of gametime at Hillsborough if a deal could be struck.

However, it would undoubtedly be a difficult environment for a young player to head into, meaning Leeds must think carefully before opening that door.
