Eustace discovers FA punishment after Leeds United v Blackburn comments
Blackburn Rovers manager John Eustace has been fined £4,000 following an FA charge into his comments following his team’s draw with Leeds United.
Eustace’s side drew 1-1 with Daniel Farke’s Whites at Elland Road on 1 January and the Rovers boss spoke after the game about the crowd influencing a decision to award a penalty to the hosts.
He was also criticised during the same game for his anger towards officials for adding on 10 minutes of stoppage time in the second half having recently snatched a late equaliser.
The FA’s statement (30 January) read: “John Eustace has been fined £4,000 and warned for misconduct in relation to media comments that followed the EFL Championship match between Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United on Wednesday 1 January 2025.
“It was alleged that the head coach acted in an improper manner during post-match interviews by making comments that imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official and/or are not in the best interests of the game.
“John Eustace admitted to the charge against him. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing.”
Leeds United v Blackburn an example of promotion bid frustration
Leeds United remain in the driving seat in pursuit of promotion back to the Premier League at the second attempt.
However, games like that New Year’s Day clash with Blackburn have served as stark reminders that it won’t be easy; Eustace’s Rovers have only given Leeds one point from their two fixtures in the Championship this season.
Every club struggles with the odd hint of inconsistency – it is very rare you will see the top four in the division, all considerably clear of the chasing pack – all victorious in one weekend or midweek.

Having said that, Farke’s men are steamrolling the majority of their opponents, setting their stall out early and getting the job done with the undoubted quality with whom they can glitter the pitch.
Their last defeat remains to Eustace’s Blackburn in November, since which the Whites have gone 12 matches unbeaten in all competitions, winning eight.
