Roma have set their sights on hiring Leeds United director of football Victor Orta as their new sporting director, according to CalcioMercato.
The Italian news outlet claims that after Dan Friedkin completed a £534million takeover of the Serie A giants, Gianluca Petrachi was removed from his role of sporting director.
Roma are now interested in Orta, while they are also considering Walter Sabatini and Nicolas Burdisso for the role.
Orta has divided opinion among Leeds supporters since Andrea Radrizzani hired for the former Middlesbrough transfer chief in 2017.
His first season at Elland Road was largely a failure.
Although Orta brought in the likes of Mateusz Klich and Ezjgan Alioski – who have since been improved massively by Marcelo Bielsa- the Spaniard wasted millions on Felix Wiedwald, Caleb Ekuban, Jay-Roy Grot, Pawel Cibicki, Yosuke Ideguchi and Laurens De Bock.
Orta’s also overhauled the youth system at Elland Road.
Leeds’ youth squads have an abundance of overseas talent in them thanks to Orta’s extensive scouting network and while a lot of them are nowhere near Bielsa’s first-team, there are the odd players who’ve been brought in who look like a potential prodigy.
Roma’s interest is a concern.
They’re a massive club who will be pushing to win silverware and, of course, Rome is an attractive city to be able to live in.
But forget the Colosseum, forget the Trevi Fountain.
Leeds has Roundhay Park, Kirkstall Abbey and – obviously – Elland Road.
We know where we’d rather live.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have missed out on a big-name target.
