Leeds United confirmed that Gaetano Berardi had been handed a new one-year contract at Elland Road on Friday.
The Swiss defender is currently three months into his recovery after having surgery on his ruptured ACL picked up in the win at Derby in July.
Phil Hay of the Athletic reported that the veteran defender had been at Thorp Arch for months completing his rehabilitation.
Many Leeds fans were delighted with the Whites’ decision to hand Berardi a new contract, claiming it was a superb gesture from Andrea Radrizzani.
The majority of those also claimed that this was the best signing of this transfer window, despite numerous record-breaking deals.
How did the squad react? Captain Liam Cooper has taken to his personal Twitter account to share his delight over the news.
“Epitomises everything we are about,” he wrote. “Buzzing for Berra.”

Berardi is currently three months into his recovery, and if out for nine months, won’t return until April – one month before the season ends.
Despite this, Berardi himself has admitted he hasn’t signed this deal to come back and have a laugh with his friends.
The experienced defender claimed he is doing everything to make sure he can get back out on the grass at Thorp Arch and potentially feature in the Premier League.
Cooper and the squad are clearly delighted with this announcement, and it brings to an end a near-perfect transfer window in West Yorkshire.
