Elland Road photo shows major change to Don Revie stand that will affect Leeds United fans
A photo circulating on Twitter shows safe standing being installed in the Don Revie stand at Elland Road after Leeds United opted to trial changes.
Last season, it was announced that Leeds United were one of five clubs to be “early adopters” for the government’s safe standing trial at football grounds [Yorkshire Evening Post].
Back in July, the now-former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said: “We are not reintroducing terraces and only clubs which meet strict safety criteria will be permitted. Thanks to a robust trial, thorough evidence and modern engineering, we are now ready to allow standing once again in our grounds.”
Now, according to a Twitter photo posted by The Leeds Salute, it seems Leeds are already installing safe standing in the Don Revie stand.
A huge boost
Leeds United’s poor form in recent months has seen the Whites slide down the Premier League table, with Jesse Marsch’s side now in the relegation zone following the 3-2 loss to Fulham.
As a result, the typically-brilliant atmosphere at Elland Road has been muted in recent weeks with fans understandably frustrated with the side’s performances.
But safe standing being available will be a huge boost to both the fans and players. The designated area is designed to improve the atmosphere and encourage fans to chant.
Leeds fans don’t usually have to be encouraged to chant but safe standing will definitely spur it on, and it’ll be noticed by the players.
In what is bound to be a scrappy season towards the bottom of the table, the Leeds faithful will be needed more than ever. Whether it be Marsch or someone else in the hot seat, the squad will need the entirety of Elland Road behind them.
On top of that, it’s good that the board are following through on their promises to improve the stadium experience. Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani have both been outspoken about the intention to expand and improve Elland Road. Hopefully this is just the start.
