Elia Caprile complains about spell at Leeds United in Gianluca Di Marzio interview
Elia Caprile has opened up about his time at Leeds United and has revealed it didn’t go as he had “hoped” after moving to Elland Road in 2020.
The 21-year-old featured heavily for the Whites’ under-21s but was never given a first-team shot during his time in West Yorkshire.
He departed for Serie B side Bari in the summer and has gone on to keep five clean sheets. Despite the experience in Yorkshire not going as he had planned, Caprile claims he learnt something from the experience.
I am aware that there are trains that pass only once. I took the train to leave for England when I was 18, then maybe it didn’t go as I had hoped but it is an experience that has left me with something,” he said (Gianluca Di Marzio, 14 December).
“My name is linked to many teams but there’s nothing concrete, I’m concentrated on Bari. At least until June, the Bari fans will have to put up with me.”
One that got away
This could have been one that got away for Leeds, particularly with their being Premier League interest in Illan Meslier. The 21-year-old has clearly done well in Italy and could go on to be a success in the future. He’s evidently more comfortable in his home country and potentially struggled to settle in Yorkshire. Leeds are renowned for looking after their younger players, so it probably was just a case of the wrong fit for Caprile.
It’s good he learnt something from the experience, but ultimately, he was never going to make an impression on Jesse Marsch’s first team plans. Caprile is at an age where first-team minutes are invaluable and heading to a lesser side in Italy did make sense.
Another younger keeper to push Meslier could be on the cards in the future with Joel Robles unlikely to be at Elland Road beyond the summer of 2023. Meslier is one of Leeds’ biggest assets and as much as the club will be desperate to hold onto him, a big bid from a Premier League heavyweight can never be ruled out.
