Leeds United: EFL chairman hits out at Wrexham in new comparison on talkSPORT

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony claims Wrexham “think they’re bigger than Leeds United” and need to calm down.

Wrexham have enjoyed increased success both on and off the pitch since Hollywood pair Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over in 2020, with League One next in their sights.

However, while MacAnthony credits Wrexham for their success, he also took a swipe at the club due to the “nauseating” media coverage around them.

Speaking live on talkSPORT, he said: “You open a newspaper and there’s stuff about the Championship, League One and League Two, but every week there’s stuff about Wrexham and it’s nauseating.

“You get why they’re doing it because they want an American audience but at the end of the day, there are 72 EFL clubs out there.

“They need to calm down thinking they’re bigger than Leeds or whoever.”

Leeds United boast a storied history

Few would think to compare Wrexham – a club on the up but who have never been any higher in the football pyramid than the second tier, which they reached briefly in 1978 – to Leeds in terms of size or history.

Leeds are three-time English champions, winning the old First Division in 1969, 1974 and 1992, the latter being the final iteration of the top-flight competition in that format before the Premier League rebranding came into effect.

The Whites have also lifted the FA Cup, in 1972 and the League Cup in 1968, once apiece.

In Europe, they have reached the final of the European Cup, now the Champions League and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Intriguingly, Wrexham also participated in the latter on eight occasions, qualifying through the Welsh Cup.

Leeds will be hoping to take a step closer to returning to their lofty position in the upper echelons of English football with automatic promotion from the Championship this season, which would see them return to the Premier League after just one year in the second tier.

Their efforts were dented by a goalless draw against Sunderland in their last outing, however, which featured a controversial handball that should have led to a penalty for the Whites but was not given.

In other Leeds United news, Don Goodman has called for “perspective” after the Whites’ draw with Sunderland.
