Early Chelsea team news v Leeds United: Two midfielders ruled out

Chelsea are set to be without two of their top midfielder when they head north to Leeds United on Sunday (21 August) in the Premier League.

The Blues played out a 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend in a fiercely-contested game that saw manager Thomas Tuchel sent off after the final whistle following an altercation with Antonio Conte.

That could mean the German will be banned from the touchline at Elland Road although that is yet to be confirmed but he will be without two players regardless.

N’Golo Kante limped off at Stamford Bridge against Spurs and Tuchel believes his injury is not good for his side while Mateo Kovacic is also out of action for the immediate future, as shared by Leeds Live.

Left wing-back Marcos Alonso is also out of action but the recent £62million purchase of Marc Cucurella from Brighton should cover his and Ben Chilwell’s absences if the Englishman is also ruled out.

Leeds United may not get a better chance to go out and beat one of the Premier League’s big six than this with Kante, in particular, a huge miss for Tuchel’s side.

The Frenchman covers the ground of three men virtually by himself when he is on song and his brilliant reading of the game makes him one of the World’s best defensive midfielders.

And now Leeds don’t have to face him or Kovacic who can win games on his own when he is at his best which will be a huge relief to Jesse Marsch and his team.

Jorginho will now likely be paired with Ruben Loftus-Cheek which is a much more comfortable duo to take on for Tyler Adams, Marc Roca and the in-form Rodrigo.

The Spaniard should be encouraged by the lack of Kante and the advantage that it will give him as the Whites look to turn four points into seven on home turf.

In other Leeds United news, Dermot Gallagher has given his verdict on an incident in the 2-2 draw with Southampton that saw some fans call for a red card.
