Dutch journalist: Cody Gakpo views Leeds United move as stepping stone to top club
Cody Gakpo views a move to Leeds United as a stepping stone to one of Europe’s biggest clubs with the Whites in talks with the PSV Eindhoven attacker, according to Dutch journalist Marco Timmer.
Eindhovens Dagblad journalist Rik Elfrink reported on Tuesday 28 June that the Whites are in talks with the attacker, although it would take a club record fee for him to leave PSV.
It has since been reported by Voetbal International’s Timmer that the 23-year-old views a move to Elland Road as a stepping stone for his career.
He wrote via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday 28 June: “The management of Cody Gakpo speaks with Leeds United as it has previously spoken with, among others, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal.
“PSV want 40million Euros for Gakpo.
“He now also sees a route a la [Gini] Wijnaldum via the foreign sub-top to the top.”
Not a bad thing
Gakpo seeing Leeds United as a stepping stone is not a bad thing at all for the Whites even if it might appear as if he is using the club somewhat.
The 23-year-old is clearly highly sought-after and Leeds will have to give the attacker some sort of compromise in order to draw him to Elland Road.
A potential release clause could be an option if he lives up to the high standards he has seemingly set at the Dutch side.
If he moves to Elland Road and improves Leeds whilst progressing himself then there can be no complaints.
The Dutch winger looks an ideal replacement for Raphinha if and when he departs Elland Road.
It is so encouraging for Whites fans to see the club actively prepare for their best players to depart the club this summer.
Too often teams leave themselves with little time to replace their best players.
Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta are certainly not taking that risk.
