Don Goodman shares what he finds ‘quite remarkable’ about Leeds United in the Championship right now

Don Goodman finds it “quite remarkable” that Leeds United are not in the top two of the Championship right now.

The Whites are in sensational form, winning nine of their past 11 league fixtures, losing just once and drawing the other.

Despite their brilliant run, Leeds still find themselves eight points adrift of leaders Leicester City, and seven back of second-place Ipswich Town, with the top two in relentless form.

“They’re on a roll, it’s a testament to the two above them that despite being on this roll their still seven points behind second place which is quite remarkable, there’s all kinds of records being set by the top two,” pundit Goodman said live on Sky Sports News (10:37, 12 December).

“Leeds are averaging better than two points a game which we always say will guarantee you pretty much an automatic place, and it may well do there’s an awful lot of football to be played but they have to keep going and try and close that gap slowly but surely.”

Keep plugging away

It is sort of typical for Leeds to be in such scintillating form, dazzling the league, a front four that is the envy of the whole division, and still be in third place in the table. In some ways you couldn’t make it up.

The difficulty is, Leicester and Ipswich – who got promoted from League One last season – have been just so relentless and are giving absolutely no ground in the race for promotion, which means Leeds have zero room for error.

From Leeds’ point of view, all they can do is just keep plugging away, keep racking up the points, and be ready to pounce when (or indeed if) one of the two high-flyers above them slip up and provide an opportunity.

We are entering now an extremely busy period where the matches come thick and fast, so who knows what the landscape of the Championship is going to look like early in the New Year?

In other Leeds United news, the club may still press ahead with legal proceedings against Everton.
