Don Goodman says Leeds ‘incident’ made him know it wouldn’t be their day v Cardiff
Don Goodman knew it wouldn’t be Leeds United’s day on Sunday when Jack Harrison saw a goalbound shot deflected wide by Patrick Bamford.
Leeds dominated against Cardiff at the weekend but lost 2-0 due to two errors in the defence.
It was as harsh a result that Leeds have endured all season but there were plenty of positives to pick up on and hopefully, when Fulham arrive at Elland Road this weekend, certain issues will have been ironed out and Marcelo Bielsa’s men can return to winning ways.
Goodman just had a feeling that it wouldn’t be Leeds’ day on Sunday though and reckons that one incident summed it all up for the Yorkshire giants.
“In games of football, you need things to fall your way and for me, things certainly fell Cardiff’s way,” Goodman told Sky Sports’ EFL podcast. “There was no better incident to highlight that than when Jack Harrison had a goalbound shot that hit Patrick Bamford on the way to the net and ricocheted to safety.
“At that point, I got the sense that might be Cardiff City’s day.”
Goodman’s right.
There have been so many matches this season where Leeds have dominated but for one reason or another, it simply hasn’t gone their way and they’ve drawn or lost.
Against Cardiff, Leeds had plenty of opportunities but lacked that cutting edge where it mattered the most.
That moment that saw Bamford deflect Harrison’s shot wide was just typical and opened up the striker to receive a lot of criticism from fans.
Bamford is a bit of an easy target given he’s a striker who does not score that many goals but that incident was just unlucky and frustrating.
If Jean-Kevin Augustin was fit, would there be questions being raised about whether Bamford should start against Fulham?
Augustin’s lacking fitness and is unlikely to play for the Whites this weekend but you can bet that if he was available, fans would be calling for Bamford to be dropped.
