Dominic Calvert-Lewin rightly rewarded as new announcement made on Leeds United striker
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s form for Leeds United has been rightly rewarded with a new announcement made on Thursday.
Calvert-Lewin was on the scoresheet again on Wednesday, but it was not enough to stop Leeds from losing 4-3 at Newcastle United.
England World Cup hopeful Calvert-Lewin showed Newcastle what they missed out on, albeit his goal did come from the penalty spot rather than open play.
And it is fair to say Calvert-Lewin has proved many wrong at Leeds with his return of eight goals in nine Premier League outings – form that has now been rewarded.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin nominated for December’s Premier League Player of the Month
Calvert-Lewin scored six goals in five games in December, scoring in every single game of the month.
It comes as no surprise, then, that the striker has been nominated for December’s Premier League Player of the Month award, as announced on Thursday.
| Game | Goals scored |
| Leeds 3-1 Chelsea | 1 |
| Leeds 3-3 Liverpool | 1 |
| Brentford 1-1 Leeds | 1 |
| Leeds 4-1 Crystal Palace | 2 |
| Sunderland 1-1 Leeds | 1 |
Calvert-Lewin did not manage to break Jamie Vardy’s record for most successive Premier League games scored in, with his streak ending at six in the goalless draw with Liverpool.
But the former Everton ace is now in the best form of his career and is well on course to surpass his all-time best seasonal tally in the Premier League of 16 in 2020-21.
Who else is up for December’s Premier League Player of the Month award?
Calvert-Lewin has some strong competition for the award as he is up against Rayan Cherki, Hugo Ekitike, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Harry Wilson and Aston Villa pair Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins.
While each of those can stake a claim for being the best of the best last month, the bottom line is that none of them can match Calvert-Lewin’s figures.
DCL will not be able to sustain the form we saw in December across the season, but even one goal in every three tends to be a good return for a player in a side at the bottom end of the division.
As long as his Leeds teammates continue to provide the ammunition, there is no reason why Calvert-Lewin cannot push on from here – hopefully after landing this individual award.
