Dominic Calvert-Lewin could make England squad for World Cup after ‘sensational’ Leeds latest

Leeds United have turned their Premier League fortunes around in the space of one week after two superb results.

On Saturday, Ao Tanaka rifled home a 96th-minute equaliser as the Whites came back from 2-0 and 3-2 down to hold Liverpool to a draw.

Just three days before, Leeds had recorded a sensational 3-1 win over Chelsea, at a time when Farke looked to be just one defeat away from the sack.

The Elland Road outfit have now climbed out of the relegation zone and sit 16th in the Premier League, two points clear of the bottom three.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been ‘sensational’ for Leeds

Before the Chelsea and Liverpool games, Leeds travelled to the Etihad to face Manchester City, but found themselves two down at half-time.

Farke opted to switch to a 5-3-2 formation, pairing Dominic Calvert-Lewin with Lukas Nmecha together up front, and the change worked immediately.

Both strikers found the back of the net as Leeds levelled the game at 2-2, before Phil Foden snatched all three points for City in the final seconds.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton highlighted the impact of Calvert-Lewin, who also scored against Chelsea and Liverpool.

Sutton said: “Dominic Calvert-Lewin, since he’s come back into the team, has been sensational. He’s given them someone to hit, a focal point and a way to get up the pitch.

“The game-changer has been Calvert-Lewin. Everyone talks about the World Cup in the summer and England strikers. I tell you what, if he goes on a run, there’s no reason why he can’t make the World Cup.”

Calvert-Lewin is on red-hot form

After joining Leeds in the summer as a free agent, Calvert-Lewin really struggled to begin with, scoring just one goal in his first nine games.

However, the 28-year-old has completely turned it around and now has three in three, against some of the biggest sides in the division.

Calvert-Lewin hasn’t hit double figures in the Premier League since the 2020-21 campaign, when he managed 16 goals for Everton in 33 appearances.

At the end of that season, the most prolific of his career, the centre forward was part of England’s EURO 2021 squad.

Calvert-Lewin hasn’t received an international call-up since that tournament, but with Thomas Tuchel having very few backup options to Harry Kane at the moment, the Leeds man may be in with a shot of going to the World Cup.

He just has to keep going, with Brentford, Crystal Palace and Sunderland in his sights next.
