Djed Spence suffers setback in recovery from injury at Leeds United – Phil Hay

Djed Spence has suffered a minor setback in his recovery from injury at Leeds after a bout of tonsilitis, Daniel Farke told Phil Hay.

The defender, on a season-long loan from Tottenham, has been out with a knee injury since making his debut as a late substitute back in September.

And while Farke confirmed to the press that he is expected back in team training during the upcoming international break, he did suffer a setback after being struck down with illness.

“Farke says Spence is on track with his recovery but had a bout of tonsillitis which set him back a touch,” he said.

“Leeds have been careful not to push him too soon.”

Well stocked

Spence was brought in to really challenge and push for the starting right-back spot, but he hasn’t had the opportunity to stake his claim really.

But while Luke Ayling has lost his place as the starting right-back at the club, despite Cody Drameh moving on Farke has found some makeshift options in Archie Gray and Jamie Shackleton.

Both have performed admirably in the role in recent weeks and Farke will be comfortable with fielding them both there whenever he feels necessary, meaning there is no pressure of Spence to be rushed back.

Tonsilitis is never nice but he should be back after the international break and that will make the team much better and much stronger, because having more options is never a bad thing.

We’ve seen how good Spence can be in this division before, and we know how much Farke likes attacking full-backs, so it seems like a match made in heaven. We can’t wait to see it, and hopefully it won’t be too long now.
