Diego Llorente is pining to play at a packed Elland Road
Diego Llorente has revealed he can’t wait to experience a full Elland Road having watched the Leeds United documentary Take Us Home.
The Spaniard arrived for £18million from Real Sociedad in September. With Covid regulations, he has only ever played in front of an empty Elland Road in the Premier League.
Due to initial hamstring and groin injuries, Llorente has only featured six times in the Premier League this season. The number 14 is feeling much more settled now, though. He was keen for the switch to Leeds despite other interest.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Llorente explained his excitement to play in front of a packed home crowd and how eager he was to swap San Sebastian for West Yorkshire.
“A lot of people recommended [Take Us Home] to me, the atmosphere the fans created at the games was spectacular,” said Llorente.
“I’m counting down the days until we can see Elland Road completely full.
“There were other offers before Leeds – last year as well – which were also interesting but they didn’t totally appeal to me.
“The moment I met with Victor and he told me about the interest Leeds had in me, I didn’t have to think about it.”
A successful season
When you consider the injury woes we’ve had to suffer this season, it goes to show how solid a campaign it’s been. Currently 12th in the table, 11 league wins and eight points off the drop. Any Leeds fan would have bitten your hand off for that in August.
Llorente, Rodrigo and Raphinha were big signings in the summer, but not just for their market value. They showed that despite being away from the top-flight for 16 seasons, Leeds United are still an appetising prospect for world-class players to prove themselves.
Our Spaniards have had frustrating first seasons, both hampered by injuries. Llorente looks like a real player, though. He was called back into the Spain squad despite making just six appearances in the Premier League, a good sign.
Marcelo Bielsa has successfully got us up and looks to have kept us in the division. It would be nice to pick up some more points in our upcoming games though, after just one win in our last five. Tomorrow we travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. Then its a home clash with Sheffield United the following week.
In other Leeds United news, Jeff Stelling has claimed this Whites target will be a Premier League player next season.
