Dermot Gallagher reacts to 'amazing' decision in Leeds United loss v West Ham United live on Sky Sports

Dermot Gallagher believes the decision to judge Jarrod Bowen’s goal as onside was “amazing” during the 3-1 defeat for Leeds United against West Ham United.

Sam Allardyce’s side are on the brink of relegation to the Championship following the gut-wrenching defeat at the London Stadium, sitting two points behind Everton ahead of their final day of the season clash against Spurs at Elland Road.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Ref Watch, ex-Premier League referee Gallagher praised the officials for getting the marginal call on Bowen’s goal correct, as well as deeming Lucas Paqueta as onside in the build-up to the third goal in added time.

“It was an amazing call for the Jarrod Bowen goal,” he said. [12:42pm]

“That is so tight and it is all about the assistant’s position at the top of the screen.

“The other one I think is even harder because he is so close that he has to look down rather than across.

“Two incredible decisions from the assistant.”

Fine margins

Sometimes in football, things just don’t go your way, and in this case Leeds were mere inches from both goals being ruled out for offside and going home with a 1-1 draw.

Although the pictures from the TV broadcast suggested that Paqueta in particular was offside, once the lines were drawn up, the officials’ eagled-eyed decision was deemed correct.

Allardyce will rue his side’s lack of creativity in the final third and their sloppy defending at times, but this really shouldn’t be his mess to fix in the first place.

The club’s decline has been coming over the last year, with an inconsistent transfer strategy and peculiar managerial changes giving the players next to no chance of delivering a successful Premier League season.

As it is, Leeds do still stand a chance of surviving relegation to the Championship on the final day, but their fate is no longer in their own hands.

Fans will still be praying for a miracle on the final day, but these two marginal offside calls are evidence that the footballing gods may be against Leeds United football club.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay claims that an international player at Elland Road has no place at the club next season and a summer transfer is on the cards.
