Dean Windass: Todd Cantwell is perfect for Leeds United
Former Hull City star Dean Windass has urged Leeds United to sign Norwich City playmaker Todd Cantwell due to his goalscoring abilities from midfield.
The Elland Road outfit were linked with the 23-year-old last summer, but director of football Victor Orta admitted getting a deal done was difficult [Yorkshire Evening Post].
Leeds could be forced to sign more players this summer after getting torn apart by Manchester United on the opening day of the new campaign, and Windass believes Cantwell would be perfect for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
“He’d be a good type,” the pundit told This is Futbol.
“He’s a Bielsa sort of player, he gets box-to-box, will get you goals from midfield. And there’s not many players that will get you goals from midfield.”
Leeds ended last season with 62 Premier League goals to their name – more than fourth-placed Chelsea – and finding the back of the net is clearly not a problem.
Nevertheless, they need to score more goals if they want to challenge for the European places, and Cantwell will be a good addition.
He scored six goals and made another six in the Championship last season to help the Canaries seal an immediate return to the Premier League, while he grabbed six goals and two assists in 37 Premier League games in 2019-20.
We really could do an additional goal threat to our attack, but luring the midfielder out of Norwich right now could prove difficult.
He is back playing in the top-flight and Daniel Farke’s side will not be letting go of one of their most creative players on the cheap.
Having shipped 54 goals last term and started the new campaign with a 5-1 defeat, defensive solidity is what Leeds really need, and we should be looking to get in a defensive midfielder capable of covering for Kalvin Phillips instead.
