Dean Jones: Raphinha wants to keep Leeds United up before he leaves

Raphinha is likely to exit Leeds United but wants to be the player to keep them in the Premier League before he does, according to Dean Jones.

The Brazilian was subject to a huge bid from West Ham in January which was turned down, but speculation has continued that he will be on the move in the summer, with Team Talk reporting that Premier League and European giants are widely interested.

The Whites had been hoping to tie him down to an improved contract but Goal reported in the last few weeks that the 25-year-old had ignored their advances.

It looks like his exit from the club is on the cards, but fans can take some solace from his intentions before he does, according to the transfer insider Jones.

The journalist told Give Me Sport: “Obviously Raphinha is expected to leave but, between now and the end of the season, he’d love to be the guy that saves their season and goes out with a bang.”

All on the line

The attacker has been United’s star man this season despite his uneven form in recent weeks.

Most of what has happened this year has been a disaster, with the injuries and the form leading to the emotional exit of Marcelo Bielsa.

The former Rennes man stood out with his performances, which got him into the Brazil team and also drew the attention of various suitors.

The future exit of a key player would usually be the main worry for Leeds fans, but with relegation still a real possibility it simply goes on the pile.

If he is able to make the difference for Jesse Marsh in the run-in then supporters might be able to accept him leaving.

If that does happen then it will make the move much more lucrative for the club, with Gianluigi Longari reporting recently that his release clause is €75million, but would drop to just €25million in the event the club get relegated.

Keeping the team up before banking them three times the transfer fee would be a reasonable parting gift if he is to leave this year.

In other Leeds United news, The Athletic has shown how Jesse Marsch has improved the team already.
