Dean Jones offers ‘sceptical’ Max Wober verdict as Leeds United return mooted

Dean Jones is “sceptical” over whether Max Wober could win back the Elland Road crowd after a return to Leeds United was mooted.

The Austrian defender left the Whites on loan late in the summer transfer window, joining Borussia Mönchengladbach and has admitted that should the Whites be promoted to the Premier League, his future wouldn’t be in his hands [Laola1, 19 November].

Wober heaped praise on the Whites suggesting that their football in the Championship has been fun to watch, however, Jones believes he will have to show his commitment to win back the support of the Leeds fans.

As quoted by GiveMeSport (26 November) he said: “I think Max Wober has to win those fans over if he’s going to actually work his way back into the setup. He’s right, it has been fun, Leeds are having fun again.

“On the pitch, they’re starting to turn a corner. They’re starting to think actually, they can get back to the Premier League. But in order to get there, they only want people that are really determined to be part of the project.

“I think some people still be sceptical about Wober, but it’s up to him.”

Hard work

When Daniel Farke arrived at Leeds United he said that he only wanted players in his side who were committed to helping the Whites return to the Premier League and it was by no means a coincidence that these comments came after Wober departed Elland Road.

The Austrian like many of the side relegated under the management of Sam Allardyce wasn’t particularly interested in playing Championship football and his latest comments come across as a player who is trying to book his place in the squad if the Whites are promoted this season.

Supporters aren’t stupid and the Leeds United fanbase will remember just how Wober departed on the eve of the Championship season. He left the Whites and Farke in the lurch so he will have to demonstrate his commitment to win back the respect of his teammates and the fans.

There is also plenty of football to be played between now and the end of the Championship season, hopefully, the Leeds players who remain at Elland Road aren’t as definite as Wober that they will make an immediate return to the top flight.

The Whites can’t afford to become complacent given the amount of teams pushing for those promotion places.
