David Prutton shares new Leeds United promotion admission ahead of playoff clash v Southampton

Leeds United will win promotion to the Premier League if they replicate their performance against Norwich City when they face Southampton, according to David Prutton.

Daniel Farke’s side face Russell Martin’s Saints in the playoff final at Wembley on Sunday (26 May) having comprehensively beaten the Canaries 4-0 at Elland Road in the second leg of their semifinal.

Although Sky Sports host Prutton admitted Norwich’s defending was nothing short of “woeful” last time out, he admits that there is potential for the Whites to repeat their excellent attacking display in the capital.

Writing for the Yorkshire Evening Post (20 May) he said: “Leeds are just about favourites with the bookmakers but I would say it is pretty level. I think you’ve got to take into account those performances and the victories for Southampton so there is psychologically a little bit of an advantage.

“If there’s a school of thought to think that if Leeds play like they did on Thursday against Norwich then they will go up then I can see that.

“But they were helped by some woeful Norwich defending and Norwich looked like they had run out of ideas after the first leg. For a team collectively to play that poorly takes some doing but Norwich absolutely did that which played right into Leeds’ hands.

“Yes, you have got to beat the team in front of you but that team in front of them wasn’t very good at all. There is that potential for Leeds to do something similar against Southampton but, but let’s be honest, Southampton are a miles better team than Norwich.”

Will Leeds United win promotion to the Premier League against Southampton?

When they have been at their best this season, Leeds United have shown that they are capable of beating anyone and everyone that they will face in the Championship this term.

Having flattered to deceive in the first leg at Carrow Road, the Whites reminded everyone just how relentless they can be going forward with their commanding display to set up a huge playoff final clash at Wembley.

Southampton have caused Farke’s side problems so far this season and while that could be playing on one or two players’ minds heading into Sunday’s game, they will still be heading into the clash as favourites.

Hopefully, they can muster the energy needed to book their place in the Premier League for next season, otherwise, it could be a summer of immense change at Elland Road as Leeds look to balance the books.
