David Prutton predicts outcome of Leeds United vs Burnley in ‘promising’ verdict
David Prutton has backed Leeds United to continue their winning momentum against Burnley at Elland Road this Saturday (14 September).
Daniel Farke’s side emerge from the international break having won their last two in the Championship, lifting the side to fourth in the table, and take on an unpredictable but strong Burnley team under Scott Parker.
Former Whites man Prutton claimed the “early work looks promising” in West Yorkshire ahead of the clash between two likely promotion candidates and tipped the Whites to emerge 2-1 victors.
Speaking on the Essential EFL podcast [12 September, 09:47], he said: “[Leeds are] in a better position this year points-wise than they were last year, which ended up with them being on 90 points and just missing out on automatic, so early work looks promising. Obviously, making up for star players that moved on, that was their next challenge.
“[It is] a really, really cracking game so early on in the season because all eyes are on these two – they’re expected to be in the top six, if not the top two, and on Saturday we’ll see where they’re at in these works in progress.
“I’m going to go for a close game, 2-1 Leeds.”
Leeds United in match mooted to be decisive
It may only be the fifth league fixture of the season, but Leeds United and Burnley both know these are the contests that matter most, given the duo’s likelihood to be vying for a Premier League spot.
The summer’s two promotion favourites meet on the Yorkshire side of the Pennines and demonstrate how quickly gaps can evaporate in the division.
Leeds sat on just two points after the first two games of 2024-25; Burnley flew high atop the league with a superb goal difference to boot, four points ahead. Now, Farke’s side have one point more than the Clarets.

With Burnley stuttering having, like Leeds, sold several of their star performers, there is a confidence that the Whites will be able to get the job done if they can steer themselves into the ascendancy early on. There are also injury concerns over at Turf Moor.
Burnley know where the net is – they’ve scored a joint-high 10 goals this season, and will face a defence which have conceded just three, if we handily disregard the Carabao Cup shambles against Middlesbrough last month.
