David Prutton discusses Leeds transfer window failures

Former Leeds midfielder David Prutton has shared his thoughts on their failure to sign anyone in the January transfer window, claiming it could be a positive.

The Whites failed to make a signing despite making moves for Brenden Aaronson [Athletic] and Calvin Ramsay [Press & Journal], while other moves were also mooted throughout the month.

While that has been seen as a failure to strengthen the squad by many, Sky Sports pundit Prutton spoke about the situation in a different light in his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, claiming it could be a positive for the players that are currently in the squad.

“It’s a good chance to get some momentum going with games coming thick and fast,” he said.

“January came and went without a senior addition to Bielsa’s squad. Again, you can look at it with different perspectives.

“If I was a player at Leeds I would take that as a huge shot in the arm that the head coach fully believes he has enough in the dressing room already.

“There has to be a belief that the players that have been out will get back in time to make a decent impact on the season among the staff.”

Prove yourself

As Prutton says, this is a big opportunity for the members of the current squad to show that Bielsa was right in his belief about the side.

The boss believed there was nobody out there that was attainable that could improve the squad, so didn’t sign anybody just for the sake of it.

That should give huge confidence to the fringe players of the squad such as Joe Gelhardt, Tyler Roberts and youngsters like Crysencio Summerville that the manager believes if they’re called upon they can do their job.

Leeds are seven points above the relegation zone in 15th place currently, but with some tough fixtures to come and the teams below them having greatly strengthened in the window they’re still in a battle.

Bielsa will be hoping key players can return from injury sooner rather than later to get them back up to speed, but until then the rest of the side should know that their manager believes in them totally.
