David Prutton baffled as Marcelo Bielsa snubs Joe Gelhardt at Brighton
David Prutton has had a dig at Marcelo Bielsa for his recent handling of the Leeds United squad.
The Sky Sports pundit was writing about the Whites’ 0-0 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post.
One notable absence during the game at the AMEX was Joe Gelhardt, who didn’t feature at all on Saturday.
This clearly confused Prutton after the 19-year-old’s strong display against Tottenham Hotspur the week before.
He said: “If Gelhardt causes Spurs problems, then why the hell is he not good enough to cause Brighton problems? And, also, you get the best out of Kalvin Phillips in midfield.
“Marcelo has been superb in what Leeds have done, he has been an icon in what is a very iconic and [historic] football club and will always be remembered as that, and this is not me signing him off.
“But it’s in situations such as this that he should very much be questioned because that is his job, and that is the nature of the PR side of it as a manager.”
Valid and fair questions from Prutton.
In the last two games, Bielsa has also played Kalvin Phillips in a back three; now, that was probably because Bielsa sometimes likes to match up against his opponents.
However, Phillips has made his progress in that role in front of the defence and to put him at centre-back is a bit odd.
To then take him off at half-time is also very strange.
However, it doesn’t seem as if there is any problem there, which is great.
The situation with Gelhardt is also a bit odd, especially after his display against Spurs the week before.
The former Wigan man was an absolute livewire in that game, yet he didn’t even get off the bench on Saturday.
Therefore, we agree with a lot of what Prutton has to say, and fans are allowed to question some of Bielsa’s recent decisions.
In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has had his say on Phillips’ attitude against Brighton.
