David Prutton backs Patrick Bamford to shine for Leeds again after England heartbreak

David Prutton has backed Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford to return to action “absolutely flying” despite missing out on the England squad.

Many expected the Whites talisman to be selected by Gareth Southgate after he was involved in 24 Premier League goals, although he was overlooked.

Sky Sports pundit Prutton believes that the decision can benefit both the player and the club once pre-season kicks off yet again at Thorp Arch.

Writing in his Yorkshire Evening Post column, Prutton expects Bamford to use this heartbreak as motivation moving forward.

“England boss Gareth Southgate was given another reminder about not taking Patrick Bamford to the EUROs in last night’s friendly against Romania at the Riverside when a group of fans kept on chanting Bamford’s name,” he wrote.

“Not being included in the squad was a ‘sliding doors moment’ for him but, having heard Patrick talk about it, he is very magnanimous.

“You hope that he comes back absolutely flying for pre-season and ready to prove any more doubters wrong that his spot within international football is there to be grabbed and chased down.”

Bamford can act as magnanimous as he likes, but there is no hiding the fact that he will have been gutted and thinking what more can he do?

While watching the clash with Romania last night and hearing his name being chanted from sections of the Riverside, he will have been itching to be involved.

One party this should benefit is Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa is known for his hardcore pre-seaosn training camps, and Bamford will be desperate for the rest before unleashing himself into the Premier League again and looking to prove Southgate wrong.

This will likely all be forgotten about should England bring home the EUROs, but even with little chance of playing or starting, it would have been brilliant to see Bamford rewarded for his efforts over the past season.
