David Ornstein: Leeds United and Nottingham Forest winner named in Weston McKennie race as medical scheduled

Weston McKennie is set to travel to the UK on Monday to complete his medical before finalising a move to Leeds United, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The Athletic journalist has reported (via Twitter, 29 January) that Leeds have won the race to sign the American international on a loan deal with an option to buy.

It’s understood Nottingham Forest displayed late interest in the midfielder, but it appears the Whites have won the race after verbally agreeing a deal on Saturday (28 January).

Ambition

The signing of McKennie is a huge statement of intent from the board and another indication of the backing they’re giving to Jesse Marsch. The 24-year-old is an international standard player who also has European experience. Realistically, Leeds have done incredibly well to get a deal over the line for a player who was sought after by a number of clubs.

The pressure is now firmly on Marsch to deliver with this squad. The Whites have quality all over the pitch and they shouldn’t be floundering near the bottom of the Premier League table. This squad has more than enough to escape relegation and it’s up to the American to find a consistent tune out of them.

A midfield partnership of Tyler Adams and McKennie is a tantalising prospect and one the Elland Road faithful should certainly get excited about. It’s been an excellent window for the Yorkshire side with Georginio Rutter and Max Wober also joining the club.

Let’s hope these signings all begin to make an impact on the Premier League stage.
