David Ornstein: Kalvin Phillips set to start for England v Croatia

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is expected to start for England in their EUROs opener against Croatia this afternoon.

David Ornstein has shared the expected line up for the Three Lions, and Phillips is set to start alongside Declan Rice in midfield.

Gareth Southgate is a big fan of the Yorkshire Pirlo, and it appears as though Jordan Henderson wasn’t fit enough to stake his claim.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on Sunday morning, Ornstein shared the major update that will leave Leeds fans buzzing.

“England look set to use back four v Croatia,” he wrote.

“Barring late changes Trippier to start at LB, Walker RB, Mings & Stones CB. Phillips expected with Rice, Mount, Sterling, Foden & Kane.”

Goosebumps.

Wow, what a moment this is going to be for Phillips, his family, and the city of Leeds.

Who would ever have thought that we would have one of our own starting the first game of this major tournament a couple of years ago? This is fully deserved.

Marcelo Bielsa will also have a huge grin on his face, as the player he single-handily transformed plays on the biggest stage for his country.

You can never afford to lose your first game in a major tournament such as the EUROs, so there will be huge pressure on the shoulders of Phillips and Rice to dominate the likes of Luka Modric.

All eyes have been on this fixture for more than a year now, and it is time to gain revenge for that World Cup defeat in 2018, only this time, we have Phillips to rely on – bring it on.
