David O’Leary makes Leeds United fanbase admission in new promotion verdict

David O’Leary believes Leeds United will be “up there” at the top of the Championship table by the end of the 2024/25 season as he hailed the club’s fanbase.

The Whites were beaten 1-0 by Blackburn in their most recent second-tier clash at Ewood Park on Saturday (30 November) and are now third in the table.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (2 December, 09:38am), former Leeds boss O’Leary shared his thoughts on the West Yorkshire outfit’s promotion hopes.

“Blackburn, I think that they had a good result against a team that’s on the up in Middlesbrough so that was a good result,” he said.

“[Leeds] will have gone to Blackburn thinking it was a tough game; they’re all tough games in that division.

“You get weeks of people beating each other but at the end of the day, I think Leeds will be there [at the top of the Championship table] and it’ll be great for the Premiership if they can come up because they have an absolutely brilliant fanbase but we all know what a tough division it is to get out of.”

Leeds United cannot afford to miss out on Premier League promotion

If there’s one thing that all Leeds fans want from the 2024/25 season, it would likely be to get out of the Championship at the second time of asking.

Last season, the Whites took the automatic promotion race right down to the wire and unfortunately fell just short with Leicester City and Ipswich Town both taking the top two spots.

This meant Leeds were forced to try and earn promotion via the playoffs, and although fans were confident about beating Southampton in the final, they just didn’t quite manage it.

After their double failure, the Whites needed to prepare themselves for another campaign in the second-tier and because players such as Joe Rodon and Largie Ramazani were brought in, they hit the ground running almost instantly.

The Whites have one of the strongest teams in the league and are rightly one of the favourites to go up but if they keep dropping points to teams such as Rovers, it will become less and less of a guarantee.
