David Norris: Shackleton and Poveda may benefit from loan move

Leeds United duo Jamie Shackleton and Ian Poveda have been urged to leave on loan this summer by former midfielder David Norris.

The Whites have made just two new first-team signings this summer with the arrivals of left-back Junior Firpo and backup goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson.

Kiko Casilla, Leif Davis and Mateusz Bogusz have left on loan in this window, and Norris believes that Shackleton and Poveda could follow them out of the door.

Speaking to Transfer Tavern, he said, “I think at their ages when you’re coming through, getting that game time will help them develop massively.

“If it wasn’t to be and they were going to be a bit too bit part, I would get out on loan.

“The Championship is a tough league, big clubs, massive clubs in there, it’s a really tough exciting league, so I think that would be great for them and just as part of their development.”

Need some backup options

While going out on loan for players at that age is beneficial for their careers, Marcelo Bielsa cares primarily about the first team and getting results.

Last season, Poveda may not have started a single game in the league, but was on the bench for the majority of our matches, and came off it on 14 occasions.

If we’re not signing another winger this summer, then it makes sense for Poveda to stay as he’s done well whenever he’s been given the chance.

Shackleton, on other hand, made three starts, but much like Poveda was used primarily off the bench as a utility player.

He was deployed in a number of positions by Bielsa and that’s something he will be needing from his side next season as well.

Again, his loan departure would hinge on any arrivals this summer, and as things stand, we’re expecting the two to stay at Elland Road.
